Tip 003 - Study to Seek Truth, Not a Spiritual High

Bible study can sometimes feel like an emotional rollercoaster—there are moments of deep joy and connection, but other times it feels like hard work with little reward. While emotional experiences with Scripture can be meaningful, our primary goal in studying the Bible should always be to seek truth. Here's how we can approach God’s Word with the right mindset.

1. Read When You "Don't Feel Like It"

If we only studied the Bible when we felt like it, how often would we open it? The truth is, not every Bible study session will bring the “feel-good emotions” we might expect. Some passages—like Leviticus—can feel dry or difficult. But studying God’s Word is about faithfulness, not feelings. Keep digging, even when it’s hard, because persistence in the Word leads to deeper understanding and spiritual growth.

2. Realize It’s Not About Me

Sometimes, we struggle with Bible study because it doesn’t excite us or seem relevant to our lives. But we need to remember: it’s not about us. The purpose of studying Scripture is to know God better and understand His will. When we shift our focus from “What do I get out of this?” to “What does God want to teach me?” we open ourselves to the life-changing power of His Word.

3. Seek Only the Truth

Emotions are a wonderful part of our spiritual journey, but they can’t be the foundation of our Bible study. When we let our feelings guide us, we risk hearing what we want to hear instead of the truth. This can lead to weak theology and misinterpretation of Scripture. Instead, approach the Bible with a heart that seeks truth, letting God’s Word shape your thinking and beliefs, no matter how it makes you feel.

Studying the Bible isn’t about chasing emotional highs—it’s about pursuing God’s truth. By reading faithfully, focusing on God instead of ourselves, and seeking truth over feelings, we grow in our knowledge of Him and strengthen our faith. So, even when it feels like hard work, press on. Truth, not a fleeting emotional high, is the foundation that will sustain your walk with God.
